Last Days in La Macarena

Our time in Seville is dwindling. Since our last post of photos from around La Macarena neighbourhood where we are staying we’ve become even more familiar with this quieter area full of low-key cafes, bars, art spaces, independent boutiques and markets

There’s an art school around the corner from the apartment called Centro de Arte Acción Directa. Through the door we can see sculptures in progress and people painting on easels.

Across the street from that is La Puerta Roja, a shared workshop between Marilene (a tailor and clothing designer, specializing in men’s fashion) and La Trementina (Creative furniture design restoration).

The nearby Alberto Pantoja workshop crafts artisan guitars, bandurrias and lutes. A bandurria is similar to a mandolin and is primarily used in Spanish folk music.

There’s also a vegan store called Red Verde. Here we picked up a bag of the most delicious peppery salad greens and other veggies. Many of the neighbourhood shops have nicely decorated metal shutters for when they are closed. Red Verde has particularly eye-catching ones.

We finally had proper Tortilla de Patatas Española (layered potato and egg) in Seville. We had been meaning to stop by Tortilla’s by the Feria Market for ages. The ladies were so nice and super efficient.

These are two of the many tortilla grills that work much like a waffle iron — easily rotated and flipped.

We’ve also had two lovely Sunday brunches at the friendly Otto Café not far from the apartment.

This is a variation on a typical Seville breakfast, which is usually tostada or bread, with olive oil, tomato (pulp) or jamón. The zumo de naranja is always delicious.

In Seville, over-the-counter medication is only available at the pharmacy. And unlike North America, the farmacia only sells health-related products. There is a specially-designated 24-hour pharmacy in each neighborhood (farmacia de guardia). You just look for the illuminated green cross.

Gary needed aspirin and I needed allergy pills on two separate occasions. My allergy pills were only 3 euros for 20 tablets!
